This brand new Javanese traditional historical narrated opera is conceived by Indonesian artist Mhyajo and adapted from Mpu Prapanca’s manuscript Nagarakertagama. UNESCO designated the manuscript as the Memory of the World. This epic piece features music composed by Franki Raden, a professor in ethnomusicology. Gitarja was Highly Commended for Outstanding Production in the shortlist for the Asian Arts Awards at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2024. The trilogy’s first episode, Gayatri, earned the Highly Commended Shortlist of Finalists of the Asian Arts Awards 2021 and was a 2022 OnComm Finalist.
