Lost in a Thai market. Lost in my TCK mind.

Born in Thailand, raised in Malaysia and Egypt, a Dunedin-based Third Culture Kid (TCK) in her 20s revisits the people and places she’s supposed to call home.

Developed for the 2023 Ōtepoti Theatre Lab Playwrights Programme, Patty with a WhY is a semi-autobiographical monologue written and performed by Patty Klinpibul. With dramaturg and director Emily Duncan, Patty has expanded the work into her debut full-length solo show, which she first performed in Ōtepoti last year and as part of the 2024 Auckland Fringe Festival.

The extended version of Patty with a WhY is returning to the stage as part of the 2025 Dunedin Fringe Festival! Both performances are relaxed and sensory-friendly with house lights kept on, no loud sound effects, doors left open, a quiet area and less formal seating.

Whether or not you identify as a TCK, Patty with a WhY promises a world of wonders, laughter, a few tears, and hopefully some answers for your own WhYs.

"To hear Thai spoken on stage in Ōtepoti is refreshing and it is when Klinpibul does so that she is the most compelling. At times funny, at times poignant, and at times educational, Patty with a WhY provides an easy viewing experience without being pithy or frothy." - Phoebe Smith, Theatreview, 1 September 2024

"Through her wry humor and storytelling, she transports the audience to different locations, using the fruit as a clever metaphor for her journey and the sense of place." - John McGlashan College News Article, 17 October 2024
