Presented by Dr Glam – Dunedin’s ever-sparkling fake glam rock star – Alter Egos Come Out To Play is an eclectic and ever-changing 90 minute performance by three Dunedin performing artists who have each created alternate personas (aka alter egos) through which they channel aspects of their wider performative palettes. In total, four magnificently fictitious characters will tread the boards of the iconic Playhouse Theatre during this uniquely theatrical evening of music and dance. Dr Glam (Dr Ian Chapman), Ch'hkt-a Cydonia (Anna Walsh), Gunther Flutney (Dr John Egenes) and Thaddius Grime (Dr Ian Chapman) abandon beige reality and replace it with uber colourful hyper-fantasy. This is no mere internet 'second life'. In this show the alter egos are three-dimensional flesh and blood reality; as real as their creators but twice as fabulous and flamboyant.
Attendees of Alter Egos Come Out To Play will experience a tuneful, twisted, sexy, scary and classy cabaretic journey through multiple music and dance styles including cyberpunk, belly dance, twisted country-swing and glam rock merged with Weimar cabaret. Along the way they’ll hear and see stories of vampiric teddy bears, the friendly skeleton family next door, and goblins who live under schools.
Among the many highlights of this fast-changing show, audiences will be wowed by the daring, slinky and sassy Lyra pole/lollipop exploits of Ch'hkt-a Cydonia, the slick musical genre mashing of Gunther Flutney, and the (Scooby Doo level) horror songs of the darkly twisted Thaddius Grime; all overseen by the platform-booted, sparkly-hatted, larger than life Bowie-esque figure of Dr Glam.
So come on! Spend an hour and a half of fantasy with a quartet of Dunedin’s sparkliest alter egos. Alter Egos Come Out To Play is truly the most inclusive show on earth so, hey – why not flesh out your fantasies and come along as your very own alter ego? You know they deserve a night on the town!
