Ana Teofilo: Measina - Treasures of Samoa
Measina - Treasures of Samoa, 2024, Mixed media on wood, 1m x 1m
'Measina' refers to the treasured cultural artifacts of Samoa, embodying the rich heritage and wisdom passed down through generations. In this artwork, Ana brings these treasures to life through intricate carvings and Pasifika motifs. The color purple symbolises the richness of her Samoan heritage. The shape of the wooden board is a common motif symbol seen and known across the pacific Ocean and is often mistaken for a frangipani but this motif shape in Samoa is referred to as a 'fa'atuli' meaning 'footprint' of a plover bird. Symbolizing the journey and the navigations of ancestors. By blending traditional and modern elements, Ana reimagines 'Measina - Treasures of Samoa' preserving Samoan culture and inspiring future generations to honor and remember their roots through her art works.
